some brilliant sunshine here in new york city. which seems to contrast to this harbinger of winter. that's the 30 rock ice rink. it opened officially for the season just moments ago, everyone. i'd like to be out there but i'm going to stay here for awhile. weather channel meteorologist maria larosa is joining us with the forecast. >> alex, good morning. we had a major storm system beginning to wrap up in through the central plains. you can see with the clouds and the showers and thunderstorms already beginning to develop. this is the area that will likely see severe weather throughout the day. and unfortunately, it does mean the potential for a few tornadoes. as the area of low pressure develops it's going to drag through a cold front and it's right in that area between the cold front and the warm front, western missouri, into oklahoma, into texas that we have the highest risk for those strong thunderstorms. the gusty winds, heavy rain, and isolated tornadoes. notice on the northern side, too, from madison to minneapolis, it's warm enough for rain. in fact we could see a few thunde

with the newer updates. now instead of a direct hit right near atlantic city, new jersey, instead now it is down into delaware. look at the watches and warnings all across the eastern seaboard. obviously most out over the water but included in that northeastern south carolina, the east coast of north carolina, and eventually those will be extended up into virginia and new jersey as well. so winds are at 75 miles per hour, but notice the path of the storm still moving north-northeast at now 9 miles per hour. it still has to take this turn to the northwest which isn't expected until about monday. but look at the size of this storm. it's huge. and we are going to see this storm continue to affect areas all across the eastern seaboard pretty much at the same time. when we're talking about the effects of new york city and long island we're also talking about similar effects down across new jersey into maryland, into delaware and into washington, d.c. as well. so this is a massive storm, a category one hurricane. and just notice the outer rain bands starting to move into north carolina still affecting

governor romney saving the salt lake city olympic games from a financial disaster. he also shares the common religious bond, mormonism, with many of the people there. so what do you make of this endorsement? is it surprising to you as it was to many of us here? >> well, i would like to think that newspaper endorsements are the most important thing in the presidential race or anything else working for a newspaper. but not so much. because individual newspapers will have their reasons. now, the fact that this paper has made the argument they've seen him etching and sketching and flipping and flopping, well, that is a legitimate point that may carry some weight. the problem is, in general newspaper endorsements carry almost no weight unless they're in local races that people don't already know about. but unfortunately people are not forming their opinions based on what we newspapers tell them. >> rachel, do you think that newspaper endorsements at all translates into votes or is it just for bragging rights? >> no, i don't think they translate into votes. i'm with dana. i'd love to sa
